NEVADA CITY, Calif. May 1, 2012 - A half-day workshop will be held May 3 on environmental health concerns associated with abandoned mines in the Gold Country including mercury in fish and arsenic and lead in soils. Continuing education credit will be available for doctors and nurses.
This workshop is part of The Sierra Fund's Reclaiming the Sierra 2012 conference being held at the Miners Foundry May 3-5, however individuals may register for the health workshop separately.
Highlights of the workshop include:
? A one-hour training that provides a background on how mercury gets into water bodies and, subsequently as methylmercury, into the fish that we eat. Continuing education credit is available for this training for both doctors and nurses.
? A presentation by retired pediatrician Tony DeRiggi, MD on the Pediatric Environmental Health Toolkit, a combination of easy-to-use reference guides for health providers and user friendly health education materials on preventing exposures to toxic chemicals and other substances that affect infant and child health. The Toolkit is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP).
The health workshop will be held from 1-4pm on Thursday, May 3. Although this workshop is targeted to medical professionals, anyone may attend.
Pre-registration is required. Costs are $40 for the half-day workshop, and include all materials and CME certificate if desired. Registration fees may be reduced or waived upon request.
